DASSIE DXPEDITION - SEPTEMBER 12TH TO 15TH SEPTEMBER 2004

So named after the large number of Dassie's (rock Hyrax) that abound around
the two seaside cottages at JONGENSGAT nature reserve. It is 8 kilometers
from the town and fishing village of STILBAAI, Western Cape Province, South
Africa. QTH South 34 24 51 East 21 22 39. This DX site is on the Indian
Ocean - two isolated wooden cottages 30 meters from the Indian Ocean and 5
km's from the village of Jongensfontein. It has a clear outlook over the
ocean to the East (Australia). Outlook to the West was somewhat blocked by
hills and mountains inland, but still good results were obtained from N. and
S. America. Weather conditions were good and propagation seemed very
favourable.

Antenna's = Kiwa MW Loop for MW and a Datong AD370 active for tropical
bands. RX Drake R8B

Primary objective of the DXpedition was MW stations from Australia.

Whilst RRI Serui was logged at a huge "S6", no other low powered Indonesians
were heard, including RRI Fak Fak which usually comes in - perhaps it was
off air that night.

Brazilian MW came in very strongly, but these were not logged as many have
been noted previously.

Universidad Mexicali is 16,060 kilometers (nearly 10,000 miles) from the DX
site.

Australia, the target of the DXpedition came in strongly and many previously
unheard stations were logged.

Veteran DXers Vince Stevens and Gary Deacon from Cape Town were also there
and will publish their results separately.

Great report, John! I seem to remember that you sent me some photos of this
location last year... it's a remote and rugged looking place, on a beautiful
ocean beach.

I'm going to have to look up "rock Hyrax" on the web; I have no idea what
this phrase or "dassies" means.

That was a super Mexican catch on 1630!

Well thanks for that Mark. New Zealand also has some veteran DXer's who get
the most amazing and mouthwatering catches from their Tiwai DX location near
Invercargill. Have a look at http://radiodx.com Also see Waianakarua DX
site for more excellent catches.

Getting away for a serious DXpedition is great fun = highly recommended!

From Europe only 1314 from Norway, whch is almost the most remote from
SA.
(1314 is during the night a collossal signal in Holland)
