hi all!
is there any program (or calculating method) to predict shortwave od midwave radio contacts... example: my friend in london (or other location) wana to know when (day/night) and with what aprox. field strength he will recieve signall emited form deanovec, croatia with xyz kW (croatian radio).... there is known: distance, emitted radio power and propagation forecast... thanx and please excuse me for my bad english ![]() |

Not sure of that first sentence. Are you asking shortwave or medium?
If so, shortwave will travel a lot further than medium wave. Atmospheric conditions will affect either. A friend of mine talked on a ham radio MOBILE to France once (at least) and he was in eastern North Carolina, USA. I don't know if sporadic E was involved or not. He was using a "screwdriver" type antenna and was on 10 meters. I don't know the power, but he was probably putting out only 100 watts. It is not unusual to talk 1000 plus miles on ham (roughly the same as shortwave) with about 100 watts of power. Hams can legally go 1000 watts or better. Some of the shortwave radio stations put out 100,000 watts: i.e. WWCR has four 100,000 watt transmitters. I'm sure someone can provide formulas, etc. for this for "normal" conditions, but I'm not up to it at this time. I suggest that you take a look at Monitoring Times Magazine. Every month
there is a page on propagation predictions for each SW band.
