I'd be friendly but firm, and I wouldn't let them keep the radio or the
battery that caused the damage unless they were exchanging both of them
for new ones or gave you a note on store letterhead acknowledging what
you gave them.

You are absolutely right on the possession issue, Mark.

I'm hoping that the manager, when he sees that he is dealing with a
reasonable adult, will take a new YB-400 off the shelf and make a customer
happy.

I didn't keep the receipt for the batteries, but I have the receipt for the
radio--which I bought recently. I didn't buy it at RS. I bought it at a
real, dedicated radio store.

If I do give them the radio and the batteries, and receive a letterhead
receipt, how will I listen to my SW, eh, Mr. RS Manager Man?

It should be an interesting morning over at the mall.

I'll send a note to you guys after I meet with the RS people today.

Radio Shack is discontinuing the YB400. I bought one there on closeout about
3 weeks ago and had to go to 3 stores to find one and that store only had
one. They may well not have one to give you and might well not look around
to find one. It's very likely that they will want to make it up with equal
value merchandise or store credit. It's also very possible that they will
want to send it to their repair facility before making any determination of
what they will do.

Hi,

At my first visit to the neighbourhood RS, I was told by a salesperson that
the manager would not be in until Monday.

It must be nice. When I was in retailing, my manager would not even have
dreamt of taking Saturday off. Anyway, that's none of my business.

The sales associate told me that the batteries are sold with no warrantee.
My blood pressure did go up a bit, but I controlled myself and told him
that the implied warrantee between the original manufacturer and the
retailer and the retail customer is well established in law. Just ask
Firestone.

I was told by a friend of mine in the biz that I might have to make a claim
against the battery company.

More to come...keep tuned.

Anyway since this is a shortwave group, I'm compelled to mention something
completely on topic. My DX equipment is a GE Super Radio, a YB400PE and a
venerable Panasonic RF-B45. On AM and SW DXing, using the whips, both radios
are essentially equal. On FM, the Grundig is superior. However, the audio
quality of the B45 on AM is much more intelligible than that of the
Grundig. I won't consider the GE as my DXing radio, since it functions
primarily as a magnificent clock radio for the mornings. The GE is almost as
good as the Blaupunkt I used in the sixties. Those old tube German radios,
Blaupunkt and Grundig, are, I think, unbeatable for sensitivity and
selectivity on medium wave, even today. When I really want to play, I use my
Select-a-Tenna, which is a real eye-opener in the daytime.

As a habitual late-night DX'er, I can report that both the Grundig and the
Panasonic are easy to control in the dark.

In reference to an earlier post, and the reception of Clear Channel AM,
every freq is audible in S. Ontario. However, no reception today beats the
AM reception available throughout the 1970's. Then, 640 in Havana was
audible, as was, at times, 680, which, I believe, was in LA at the time.

Currently, my evening companion at times, WABC, is obliterated at drive time
by some piece of junk broadcasting during daylight hours from the Niagara
Falls area. I've had to call them several times to tell them to cut their
carrier after sunset. I just had to mention how expensive it was to keep it
on, and how expensive it would be when all the Ontario WABC listeners notify
the FCC. The offender has been careful since then.
