Default "Easy" European DRM Catch For North America

If you happen to be awake at 2 AM EST (0700 UTC), you can catch one of
two DRM shortwave transmissions from Deutsche Welle from Wertachtal,
Germany which are easily receivable from my location in Detroit.

The strongest one (and it's in English) is on 7265 kHz. It comes in
with very few dropouts. Wonderful FM-table radio fidelity. The other
one (in German) is on 5975. Both claim to be broadcasting with 200
kilowatts.

These transmissions are a pretty good demonstration of what European
DRM shortwave can sound like in North America.

I've also been able to occasionally receive RTL Luxembourg on 6095
(interfered with by Dr. Gene Scott on 6090) and 5990. These
transmissions are on 24 hours per day. I've had my best luck with
these about 0200 UTC (9 PM EST).

Later on in the morning (1000 UTC or 5 AM EST), you can also pull in
Deutsch Welle's transmission on 3995 to Europe.

I use a TenTec RX-350 shortwave receiver connected to a Butternut
80/40 two-band vertical.

One thing notable... The commercial software from Merlin
Communications (latest version 2.034) is MUCH better at pulling in the
weak DRM transmissions than is the free DREAM software (v1.1.5cvs). I
wonder why this is....

Nice catch Fred, the only QTHs I can get are Sackville and Bonaire. I'll
give this new 200kW powerhouse a try.

Your comparison of Merlin to Dream is interesting. I also use both and find
that Dream does a better job. Perhaps each does a better job under
different circumstances and one should switch between them more often to
get the best at the time.

I also use an RX-350 for DRM and SWLing. Filter selections (and audio
quality) are very good and easy to select and adjust. However I find that
for deep DXing (and NDB hunting in the low band) my Icom R75 does a better
job. It's nice to have choices.

Fred;

I live in San Diego area and have received DRM via Sackville @ 6010
over the holiday break and nothing since then?

Any ideas / news? I have modified a sangean ATS803A with homemade
NE602 mixer board and using DREAM..

Sincerely;

Stephen
