I just got the same catalog yesterday, and noticed the antenna right away. I
believe it is the first time it has been offered in the Sportsmans Guide. I was
thinking of getting it, just to drive my allready nosy neighbors crazy. There
allways asking me questions about my longwires, and dipoles on the roof of our
house. I wonder how this thing would work on the SW bands? Good DXing to you,

Correct! It is an antenna formerly used by the Swedish military (I used
one when I made my military duty.) As these are no longer used by the
military, a lot of them have reached the surplus market here in Sweden,
and now apparently also the US. It is good as a portable VHF/UHF discone
antenna, as this is what it was built to be.

You could of course use it as a glasfiber mast to support other antennas
if you like.

For its wide range discones are good for spread spectrum and frequency
hopping transmissions wich are commonly used on high grade military
equipment.
Did they now switch over to satellite comms?
Any sugestions how much it would cost over here in europe/ germany? I
surely would like to get one or two of these masts for a very(!)
reasonable price (below 40EUR) :-) to support some wire antennas on
field days....

shortwave. It seems to work alright.

I'm not looking for the antenna but for a 33ft/10mtr lightweight
transportable mast only.
I've already a good inox steel diamond discone antenna hooked up in the
attic.

Last year I bought some exterior grade plastic pipes and pipe couplings
that I cemented on to the ends of the pipes and I mounted my hand held
tree limb pruning saw on one end of the pipes with a metal bracket I
made.I used that to cut down some tree limbs on some tall trees in my
yard.Wouldn't something like that be usefull (minus the saw of course)
for an antenna mast? and it can easily be assembled and disassembled as
needed.

Did you have the cost of the parts available..? I want to have at least
33ft... I'm a plumber and heating installer by profession and I have
access to many parts for homebrewing something. But military grade
quality stuff is hard to get otherwise on surplus prices :-)

I bought five sections of exterior grade plastic pipe and the pipe
couplings and the pipe couplings cement at a local Home Depot store to
make my tree limb saw arrangement.I cemented the pipe couplings on to
the pipes and then I screwed the pipes together one at a time as I
worked the saw up as high up in the trees that I wanted to go,I needed
to reach up a little over fifty feet high to saw off the tree limbs.It
was sort of cumbesome but it worked ok for me.I don't remember exactly
how much money it all cost me but it wasen't much.Check out your local
building supply stores.Also about five or six months ago there was an
article at www.boingboing.com about a small weird looking bent wire
antenna and I think the article said the antenna was developed by
NASA.It is suppose to be a very good antenna too.
