Hello all, like the subject line says I'm getting back into SWL. I was an
avid listener as a youth in the mid 1980s and even had a modest QSL collection. My current shack consists of: GE World Monitor model 7-2990 (bought new in 1985) Panasonic RF-9 (bought new in 198?) Zenith TransOceanic H-500 (picked up at Salvation Army thrift store for $20!!) Needless to say I'm a bit 'out of the loop'. Can anyone suggest some good Yahoo or other groups to join? I'm going to have roughly $400-500 to spend after Christmas, what are some good receivers to look at? Thanks in advance. To reply via email remove the no.spam from the address. ---Steve |

Well you might try to pick up a used Drake R8 or, (gasp) a new ICOM R75. At any rate, welcome back to the hobby, and to RRS, always a hotbed of activity. dxAce Michigan USA http://www.iserv.net/~n8kdv/dxpage.htm |

I like the look of the R75 and I've read a bit about it. What's your take
on it? "dxAce" wrote in message ... warsteiner wrote: Hello all, like the subject line says I'm getting back into SWL. Welcome back to the hobby. If you're a DX-er, a used
Drake R8 or an Icom R-75 will do. If you're into program listening, a used Drake R8, a Grundig Satellit 800, or a used Sony 2010 will do as well. --Mike L. "warsteiner" wrote in message m... be sure to put aside about $150 to upgrade the R75 to make it a real
nice receiver. otherwise you are wasting your money. it has some serious holes that need to be plugged. also be sure to get a used one for than $400, that will help you stay in budget, a new one will take all your money with none left over for the required upgrades. Guy Atkins did an excellent job upgrading his R75 although for the average person, they are not all required. I have worked with a properly modded 75 and can tell you what it needs in your price range. I DO NOT suggest you do all the mods yourself unless you are VERY good with surface mount work. dxAce wrote: warsteiner wrote: I like the look of the R75 and I've read a bit about it. Heck, a used Icom R71a, Kenwood R5000 or JRC 525 or 535
will do, too. --Mike L. "Michael Lawson" wrote in message ... Welcome back to the hobby. If you're a DX-er, a used Drake R8 or an Icom R-75 will do. Welcome back to the international ether, warsteiner. Your biggest culture shock
will be in discovering that most of the stations you remember are historic memories! As previously stated, you'll need cap mods to improve the a.g.c., audio, & sync performance on ICOM's R75. A cheaper alternative would be Yaesu's Century Frog, a.k.a. FRG-100. As for being out of the loop, your receivers will do just fine, excepting a little drift during warm-up. You might just find the audio response of current models extremely lacking compared to your stable of collector's items. Before you go hog wild & spend several C notes on a receiver, peruse the bands with your current collection & see what's out there. |
