Stopped dead at 03:40 exactly. Then the start of Watch America religious
prog. Is this their ID tone? I've never heard the beginnings of this program
before.

I've never heard the beginnings
of this program before.

WWRB starts to broadcast on 5050 at 2300 UTC.

It's the sound of the black helicopters, coming to start
yet another "Jesus Radio" loon show.
There's little else left on shortwave....sigh.
Must be a lot of money to be made
by scaring old hams into thinking they're
going to Hell, because that's just about
the only people listening any more.

I came across a program the other day from one of the domestic US shortwave
broadcasters that started out with the brief martial music interlude (about
10 seconds) that was used in Nazi Germany for official radio broadcasts
when the Furher or the propaganda minister was about to speak. It was
rather shocking.

Brain fade time, but I vaguely remember a description in one of the
hobby electronics mags (PE, RE, or Monitoring Times) about a system that
the stations can use to determine which antenna angle gives the best
results to their target area by picking up backscatter and determining
where their signal is going. (Obviously before the time when they could
stick a receiver on the Internet and just listen).

Anybody know any details?

Really? I wonder how much longer it will be before homeless drunks in
the US start claiming to be Hitler instead of Jesus. I suppose that soon
all of the Konspiracy Kookz will claim to be Hitler reincarnated. And
then there's the white trash in the US who paint over the name "Nissan"
on the tailgates of their pickups so that only the "SS" part is visible.

It is possible to determine the optimum take-off-angle (TOA) using an
analysis of backscatter. Possible, not easy.
It is improbable that WWRB has the expensive equipment and personnel to
perform the feat and even more unlikely that their limited antenna system
could benefit from knowing an optimum TOA. Note their occasional strong
second harmonic on 10100 kHz and how few antennas are in their "kit."
