Hi all,
I have a icf-sw77 that has been working fine for years. I lost AM receive last night. FM works fine and I checked different antennas, jacks, power and everything else I could think of. I came home from work and tried it again. I can scan through the band and toggle freq. no problem. I did see it come back a couple times for a split second and then go dead again. Has anyone had this problem before? I called sony and they said. repair flat rate = $130.00 exchange = $383.00 I would like to trouble shoot it before sending if anyone has any ideas on this??? |

Do you have static removal of some type installed on the antenna lead in
? Static can wreck a silicon chip in a hurry. I fyou know anyone who can do a diagnostic on your radio I would sure ask them if they would. I had a scanner get zapped once because of static on the antenna. It would not scan trunked systems all of a sudden. I finally turned it in and got my money back. I'm not sure what I can do for it now if it got static zapped. AM comes back only for a split second when I am trying to tune in something and FM works fine. |

If you know how to open the case of your SW-77, you might be able to locate the specific area on the circuit board which is most sensitive to being pushed with an insulted tool like a tooth pick or plastic stick. If you do find a suspect area, look carefully at the solder joints with a magnifying glass for evidence of cracks or a dull appearance to the solder, which should be shinny. There is also the possibility of a loose connection with one of the wiring connectors, especially the ones on the ends of ribbon cables. Try wiggling them to see if the problem goes away. BTW- Has the radio ever been dropped? This could have damaged a circuit board or caused something to become loose. I will give it shot! thanks |

I looked all over in there for cold solder joints around the jog dial but I don't see anything. I have had the radio for 3 years working fine and I have never dropped it. Man I really don't want to drop $130.00 on this radio as I spent enough just to get it. |

The best way to cut your losses is to sell the radio as is to someone that wants it for spare parts or can fix it. Then use the sales money to buy a good used one. ----== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com - Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 100,000 Newsgroups ---= East/West-Coast Server Farms - Total Privacy via Encryption =--- |

Starman, I took your advice because I'm tired of not having a decent radio. I have been using a yahct boy 206 and it is a decent little radio. It just doesn't cut it. I just grabbed a 7600gr through amazon. Thanks, Dave |
