The Kaito KA1103 (also sold as the Degen DE1103) is probably the best
performing radio in the world for less than $100.

I have the Degen DE1103 version and I absolutely love it!

You also asked about the 1102. I also have a Degen DE1102. When the 1102
first hit the market, it made a lot of people take notice about Degen
radios. By the time they released the 1103, then Degen became a major
player. I like my 1102. It's small yet powerful, and it has a pretty blue
light that glows from every single button. But I can only use one radio at
once, and my 1103 is my every day radio. That means that my 1102 only gets
used on the day that my 1103 is hooked to the battery charger.

Honestly, you can't go wrong with either radio.

Have them both, use them both, LOVE them both. They represent some of the
greatest values available today for radios in their class (smaller
portables, under $100). I would not hesitate to recommend either-- or both--
of them.

Better radio than 1102. About the same performance as the ATS-803a.

Was found to be noticeably better than 1102, but also bigger. The bugs
are also worked out by now. For only 80 bucks, it's a steal. (They want
139 EUR for the thing over here - you can get a 7600GR for less if you
look hard.)

Be sure you buy it with a credit card that doubles the warranty.
You'll need it!

Shawn,

There is a lot of enthusiasm about the 1103 and it has a lot going for
it. But I find myself hardly ever using it because of the volume
control design.
It has no dedicated volume control. You must engage the volume control
button, then adjust the tuning knob to move volume up/down and then
wait for the volume control process to stop - only then can you use the
tuning knob again for tuning.

To me it is very awkward and takes the fun out of using the radio. I
am not a fan of the fake analog display either. Because I find the
design frustrating, it gets little use.

I appear to be in the minority as there is a lot of positive feedback
on the radio. I think for program listening, where you set the volume
and forget it...it would be okay. It's too bad they didn't give it a
dedicated volume control. By the way, the 1102 has up/down volume
buttons.

I did a review at radiointel.com if you want some more detail.

I looked at the reviews for the 1103, and already owning an 1102, I
decided that I would NOT splurge on an 1103. I like the convenience of
having a dedicated volume control. It also seems that the performance
difference between the 1102 and the 1103 is only minimal at best. The
volume control problem, and the fake analog dial that does nothing
except shove the display and the buttons to the periphery of the front
of the radio, are BIG strikes against the 1103 IMO. Seeing that the two
radios are just about the same price on ebay, I'd go for the 1102.
