Does it seem like there's little reason to buy every portable that comes
out, and end up with 30 radios when you only use a couple? I have one tabletop (Yaesu FRG-8800) and one portable (Degen 1102) and that's enough for me. I haven't been using the Degen much lately though since it doesn't perform well under these poor reception conditions that we've been having lately. Some of you seem to buy every latest portable that comes out. First off, I don't have that kind of money and second it seems like an awful waste of money to buy radios that you don't end up using just to try them out. ----== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com - Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 120,000+ Newsgroups ----= East and West-Coast Server Farms - Total Privacy via Encryption =---- |

I occasionally use a Sony ICF-SW77 at home and an ICF-7600GR when I'm traveling. Those are all the portables I need. (I should confess that I have a tiny Grundig Mini-World 100PE tucked away in a drawer, but its antenna is broken and so it would be hard to use it now.) I love the SW77, even though I think it was overpriced. Steve |

It doesn't work that way.
I for example am in linear amplifiers. When I see an amp for sale at a bargain price, I buy it in the knowledge I can resell it and not lose any money, but I had the pleasure of using it. What would you prefer, a few hundred dollars in bank, where once a month you get a piece of paper telling you h\you have X saved, or would you rather have some equipment and enjoy using it, with the knowledge that you can always "cash in" on selling a radio and not lose any money on it? You only live once and money is there to be spent! Rgds Richard SO5GB "running dogg" wrote in message ... I agree with you too, Richard. I just think people are better off
spending their money on tabletop sets, where the different capabilities of various sets are more pronounced and....well, they're just more *interesting* than portables. Steve |

Some folks enjoy trying out different radios.
Most radios seem to have a good resale value, so there is not much lost. |

Well maybe some of them turn around and sell the old ones, I don't know. I
have ended up with a collection of radios over the years, but the only portables I still have are my Sony 2010, which I only use while away from home or listening on the patio, and an MCE analog AM-only portable which I bought at a hamfest for $1. I hang onto it since I think it's neat because all the controls are labeled in German, and on front it is called a 9 Band Weltempfanger. Plus, it is a cheap portable SWBC receiver that I'm not really afraid to lose. I also have an old Realistic Patrolman-9 which was given to me, and I think it's a neat radio since it not only covers SW, but LW, MW, VHF, and UHF. It should be a fun radio to take camping this summer. I also used to own a Sony 7600, and sometimes wish I still had it. It was a really neat portable AM/SSB receiver. It could be that many people who buy new portables have their own collection, too. I know if I had the money I wouldn't mind buying all sorts of portables. I'd probably play with each one every so often, while keeping the others on display like my own personal museum. But, since I haven't won the lottery and the Nigerians STILL won't send me the 12 million dollars they promised, I'll just have to be satisfied with the radios I do have. And if I ever get tired of any of them, I'll sell them. -- Tom Sevart Frontenac, KS http://www.geocities.com/n2uhc |

![]() Table Top receivers are Ok.. - But you can't walk around with them, take them walking down the beach, out in the woods or out on a Bike.. Portables; Esp. Shirt pocket size ones are just fun Dan ( Listening to 7.415, Radio New Yourk International ) |

Personally I am all set with portables...I have my Grundig YB-400
(which I use with a Sony AN-LP1), which is excellent for me right now. I am looking forward to the warmer months, when I'll be able to take it outside and hear the world in great clarity. I also have a Grundig Mini World 100 at work. I pretty much just listen to AM on it, which is fine. I like it because it's small and is easy to tuck away in a drawer, or put in a coat pocket. I hope to get a decent tabletop eventually, though the usefulness of a tabletop seems limited for me...being in an apartment, I can't run a wire outside. I kind of like the Satellit 800 as well (at least the reviews I've read); maybe I'll get one of those eventually. It's cool if someone wants to pick up every portable that comes out...but I wonder how different one Chinese portable is from the next...it's not like there are so many different features between each radio. |
