Hello all. I'm new to the SWL hobbie and to news groups so bear with
me. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about a Radio Shack
DX-160. I just got one off of ebay for $60. My question, is it
better than my Grundig S350 ? I've been listening to SSB on the S350
with a Grundig FR-200 as the bfo. Just wondering if the DX-160 will
be a big improvement or a waist of time. Thanks for any reply.

Go to the archive for rec.radio.shortwave at groups.google.com and
search back for "DX-160". There was a good thread a few months
back on what's the best antenna to use with it. It should be
comparable to the S350, maybe with less images but prone to
overload if you put too much antenna on it. Probably a lot nicer
to tune, as it's got smoother acting knobs (as I remeber playing
with it in the store back when it was new).

I disagree. A DX-160 with a good antenna is a very fine radio; particularly
sensitive and able to hear things that a lot of lesser radios can't. It was
and still is a very popular radio, due to its performance. It doesn't
compare to more modern top-of-the line radios, but for $60 there probably
isn't a better radio or one that is more fun to cruise the bands with.

I fear that wasn't a particularly good deal when you're mainly looking
for improved reception. The S-350 is by far no DX rig (someone said the
innards reminded him of '70s portables; at least the narrow filter is a
CFU type), but the DX-160 never was either. As far as I'm aware it was
an entry-level rig for a number of people on your side of the pond back
in the 70s (and thus qualifies for some good memories, but that's about
it). You'd better picked up, say, a Sony ICF-7600D(S)/2002/2003, Grundig
YB400 or invested a bit more ($80) into a new DE1103.

Thanks for all of the reply's. I've just got an email from the seller
and it should be here by Monday. Can't wait to get it and check it
out. All the reviews that I've read on the DX-160 have been good.
Hope to be able to pick up WBCQ down here in Louisiana.

Once again thanks for the reply's

Johnnie
