Default What is Sync Detect ?

- Wondered..

Have a non SSB portable that whistles in a descending tone as you tune
in a station..
Is this the same thing as sync detect??
If not, is there a name for it?

Hi Barn'

Here's a brief run-down on synchronous detection:

It could be a synchronous detector. If the tone rapidly disappears as the
pitch gets very low and the signal is clear and stays that way (for a stable
signal), it is. What make and model is the radio?
Knowing that, someone would be able to answer your question definitely.

The 1108 is supposed to have a sync detector not the 1105 as far as I can
tell.

Agreed. It does not even have SSB reception so it is highly doubtful that it
would have the complexity of a Sync-AM detector, and not promote that fact!
If it is actually making a heterodyne on each AM station as you tune it in,
it would seem to be defective. If it is only on some, then the tone is
probably caused by image frequencies from other stations - a weakness of the
receiver design.
