![]() From: "RHF" Organization: http://groups.google.com Newsgroups: rec.radio.shortwave Date: 21 Nov 2005 07:32:44 -0800 Subject: Think about Longwave (LW) and AM/MW Radio Reception and Mobile {Car} DXing Greg, No I do not have the HeathKit Mohican GC-1A any more. http://cgi.ebay.com/Heathkit-GC-1A-M...0QQitemZ583260 3589 It was a single conversion Radio with a 455 kHz IF. Note - The HeathKit GR-78 was a follow-on to the GC-1A. http://www.cpinternet.com/~ki0le/pages/gr78.htm http://www.member.uni-oldenburg.de/o...tc/GR78_Schema tic.jpg I thought it was 'something' back then; buy a Grundig Satellit 800 Millennium is a far far better Radio. RadioShack Realistic DX-394 "MOD'ed" by Low Bander would be a better use of your money - IMHO http://cgi.ebay.com/REALISTIC-DX-394...ET_W0QQitemZ58 32923476 hope this helps ~ RHF . . Yes, I'm sure the Sat 800 is a better radio. So is my DX-440, no doubt. But I like the looks of that Mohican - I'd like to pick up one in good condition. Greg |

We're talking about the transistorized one from the eraly sixties? I suspect it was never very good. That was an era when they were still learning about transistors, and a lot of those early transistor shortwave radios were not very good. There was a "sequel" to it in the late sixties or early seventies, I want to say the GR-78 but that may be a wrong memory, that was similarly intended to be a portable but not like the "all band portables" of that time that you'd buy at the drugstore. I don't know how good it was, but it at least kicked in a second conversion stage on the highest band to reduce image problems. Michael |

MB - Yes that was the HeathKit GR-78 and it was dual-conversion
above 18 MHz. As you correctly noted the HeathKit CG-1A Mohican Receiver had it's 'limitations' being an early 1960s generation 10+ Transistor Radio. The HeathKit GR-78 Receiver came along in the 1970s and was a little better Radio. But for Looks the HeathKit CG-1A Mohican had all those Chrome Knobs - - - A Real Pretty Radio ![]() FWIW - I have two HeathKit GR-78 Receivers down in Sub-Basement # 3. One is a Project Radio with the Manual and the other is a Parts Radio. The Two are available as a Set for $200 - Includes Shipping in the 48 States. ? ? ? Any Takers ? ? ? Note - Project Radio = Needs Repairs and a lot of Time and Work. Note - Parts Radio = Beyond Repair [.] that's all folks ~ RHF |
