While I've not used the Degen model that John S. recommends here, it
seems to be the consensus here that it's the best under $100 portable, and that it pretty much stands its own across the board among compact portables. I'd personally go with the Sony ICF-SW7600GR as far as compact portables go. The sync detector feature can really make a difference in certain listening conditions (adjacent channel interference, fading). If you wanna go all out, the E1 is a very nice fully featured portable, but it's larger in size (and in price!). junius |

Go with the Sony 7600GR! It's a LOT of radio for the money! They were
selling for around $130 US. "junius" wrote in message ups.com... E1's dont even have an AM antenna,or so I understand. In my opinion, them
E1's are wayyyyyyy over priced.Too Much Money For The Amount Of Bread. They are not worth it.I will buy one for two or three dollars if one shows up at the Goodwill thrift store six tenths of a mile South (South is always best) of me,waiting on me. cuhulin |

I agree with the other posters. Sony's 7600GR is the way to go in this
category. There are cheaper radios, but they're unlikely to rival the 7600GR in performance. There are better performing portables, but they're also very expensive. I personally don't think I'll ever spend more than $200 on a portable receiver again. Steve |

Reviews show that the whip antenna works quite well on AM (MW) unless there is too much interference that you can null with a directional antenna. The advantage of using a whip is that you don't have to turn the radio for your local MW stations, which can be a big plus for some. As far as the price -- the same as the Grundig Satellit 500 and 700, yet has many more features. Pay a cheap price and get a cheap radio. As far as the E1 being way over priced -- find another NEW radio with its features for a lower price. You can't. The E1 has some features that some expensive table tops don't have. I hope to get an E1 when Universal Radio starts selling factory refurbs. Funny how Sony 2010 refurbs never showed up. Yet when it came out, it was one of the most problem radios you could buy. I had one and got rid of it quick. The ones sent back to the factory probably were sold again as new. |

A radio,any radio,isn't worth it's salt if it doesn't have a built in
antenna for AM,if such a radio supposedly has an AM band. Daddys Handssssss,,,,,,, www.us963.com Jacksonnnnnnn,,,,,,,, where GOD isn't dead,,,, cuhulin |
