I prefer my SW-77 to my 2010. Then again, I prefer my DE-1103 to my 2010...
Yes, it is a SPLENDID radio... "Rikk" wrote in message ... hi, anyone tell me if the sony icf sw77 is a good radio please thanks |

It's a very good radio. It's large and heavy for a portable. Sony
stopped making it . You can buy them used. |

Excellent portable set, the 'SW77. On a par with Sony's venerable
ICF-2010 in terms of performance. It's my opinion that the SW77 offers superior performance to any compact portable set on the market today, although the 'SW77's performance will not match that of Eton's new E1 portable. The 'SW77's one real flaw is the chuffing that accompanies manual tuning with the tuning wheel/disc. Other than that, I would say that it's top-notch all the way. If you've found a good deal on the 'SW77 and you're looking for a premium grade portable, it's worth going for. It is not a real portable radio,
becasue it must be carried around with both hands. A slide ruler for volume control looks a little bit "cheapy". On FM waves there is no indication if you are in STEREO or MONO mode. And the biggest flaw about that radio is a strong "birdie" around 3.640 Mhz (LSB, USB or CW). But on the other side it is a very useful and nice made radio. Actually, something should be said with regard to the inferior quality FM reception you can often expect with the SW77. While some units are evidently not too awful, the FM section is notoriously bad on the SW77. For some units, you must off-tune from the actual frequency in order to clearly tune in a station. For mine, any heavy bass comes through with horrendous distortion. My earlier comments of praise for the SW77 were for shortwave use only. I've not used it much for MW reception; and, as stated, for FM reception, the SW77 is the pits. It would be nice if the only problem with the SW77's FM section were the failure to indicate stereo/mono. And the biggest flaw about that radio is a strong "birdie" around 3.640 Mhz (LSB, USB or CW). Hmmm, I never noticed that before. Interesting. And true on my SW77, too, in LSB and USB modes. But on the other side it is a very useful and nice made radio. |
