Not much for me to write today as I'm about to head to the Yarra River
and enjoy the opening night of The Commonwealth Games here in Melbourne, Australia. Today I post on a number of international newsgroups, as well as posting on aus.radio.broadcast, so G'day to anyone that may be reading this from outside Australia. March 15 is a special day because I get to remember this day, 17 years ago, as the first day I crossed the international dateline and landed in the United States of America, first in Honolulu, then in Los Angeles. 17 years later, I've got to give come credit to my favourite Los Angeles radio brand, namely 102.7 KIIS FM ( http://www.kiisfm.com/main.html ) who since 1989 have retained the same logo and much the same format. One of KIIS-FM's positioners - "LA's #1 Hit Music Station" has inspired our local 101.9 Fox FM to adopt a similar image. Catching a shuttle bus from LAX to Anaheim on the night of my family's arrival, I was amazed how scattered the freeway was with advertising billboards, and how......er......."orange" the clouds in the sky looked (to explain what I mean, here's a link to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_pollution ![]() In coming days, I'll try to recall some more about my time in the United States, but not just for its own sake. *radio*active is a new "blogging" report. In my next post, I'll also explain what my objectives are for this new blog. ....From Justin |

That's no misprint - 2UW, not just 2UE, have used the "Radio-Active" slogan. So 2UE are not the first to put this "play on words" into a radio context. As I'll reveal here soon, I intend putting radio*active* into two contexts of my own. While this report's name is far from original, the theme of this report is appropriate because it really is all about "taking action". As the owner of my own small network of radio licences (more about this later), I'm motivated to write this report from "a manager's perspective". Authors Sam Deep and Lyle Sussman give us their spin on what the "act" in the word "active" means: A - Analyse your situation C - Choose the best strategy and then T - Track your choice [1] Something that underpins a capacity to furfill the requirements of "the ACT process" described above is to have ready-made, an "information system". Currently in Tafe Studies, I'm learning about "Marketing Information Systems", which underpin a capacity to conduct a marketing research process - the "relationship between information and decision-making" in marketing. In the context of radio broadcasting, setting up an "Information System" is likely to assist a radio station in the furfillment of production, sales and marketing functions. The type of information gathered will impact on the quality of the decisions made - effectively, how "active" a radio station is in achieving objectives. Decisions based on information that's gathered and conveyed in an "Information System" will range from the strategic (eg: directing a format) to the tactical (having a street promotions crew). As my 2006 marketing text explains: No matter what the nature of the decision (to take *action*), managers require information to maximise the probabilty that their decsions are the right decisions [2] In order to gather together the required information for building my own radio station "information system", this series will first examine the biggest radio broadcasting market in the world - The United States of America. This early segment of this blog will be called radio*active*USA. A trip through several North American markets is how this report will take first steps in the process of getting a radio station to be radio*active*. More as the week progresses. ....From Justin Resources: [1] Act on it!, Deep, Sam and Sussman, Lyle. 2000 Perseus Publishing [2] Marketing, A Strategic Approach. ![]() MIDTOWN, NEW YORK CITY Thursday, 23 March 2006 I'm writing to you tonight from one of the world's biggest internet cafes, located on West 42nd Street, just around the corner from Times Square in New York City. It's 9pm right now (1pm the next day in Sydney and Melbourne). I'm currently listening to the highly dramatic Talk Radio of WOR 710AM ("real" talk radio, NY's first AM station in HD Digital ![]() WABC (770AM). I am most interested to study the Left-Right political divide of Talk Radio (a highly inflamed divide between liberals and conservatives) here in the States and am carrying a book about American Talk Radio Wars that I purchased at RMIT University in Melbourne last year. Especially having listened to Los Angeles talk station KFI this morning, and WOR this evening, it is incredible the amount of hyperbole the announcers use here to get their point across. A big news story here today was President Bush stressing the need to include "internet blogs" as a means of helping to get more "good news" about Iraq into the public sphere. A nice little story was brought to my attention by a bloke I spoke with on the Long Island Rail Road, in between JFK Airport and New York Penn Station at Madison Square Garden. It's about a coyote captured yesterday in Central Park and is front page news on the cover of "metro", New York's version of Sydney and Melbourne's MX newspaper. Page 2 of tonight's "metro" describes the Empire State Building as being lit tonight with yellow and white lights for the spring season. This monumental site greets you as soon as you leave Penn Station. Gotta go. Must get back to Penn and get the train to Washington DC. In such a rush that my diet today has consisted of Doctor Pepper on my AA (American) flight to from LA to NY, plus 2 Cheeseburgers with excessive amounts of fancy ketchup at Seventh Avenue McDonald's. Healthwise, Things can only get better though as it is easy to shop here. There's even a Kmart in the subway ![]() Would love to write all night as I've been keeping notes and taking photos, but 80% of it is better kept for when I get back home to Australia. Take care and I'll write again as time allows. ....From Justin (Backpacker Bearcave) |
