Default DE1103 ssb & bfo?

I am going to buy a Degen or Kaito 1103. I just bought the DE1107
which is an analog radio which looks like the 1103. I gave to Niece
for being such a nice kid and studying hard. I played with it before
I gave it to her and I really liked mobile SWL. I don't know why I
would buy a Kaito tho cause I think they are a lot more money than a
Degen from Lipyn.

Mister seeing eye dog - I don't care about resale and will give radio
to another of the kids in the family and then maybe upgrade. I will
take your advice for nice Sony portable from other thread and consider.

So what is up with the tuning steps and the fine tune. Is cw just tune
to side of the carrier and is there a real ssb mode or BFO? Radiointel
review wasn't clear (to me) on exactly what wqas going on. I like to
listen to both SSB and CW so I need to be able to dial in nice.

regards,
Bob

It's BFO, and it works surprisingly well. Set it once for someone on
frequency and you only have to fiddle a bit for the odd ball who is .5
khz off. Of course it isn't as simple as product detectors and true
fine tuning, but this is only a $60.00 radio.

John - Ok, thanks, I'm looking forward to getting radio.

Is there a bfo knob? All I see is a fine tuning knob.

That's the BFO knob...works like the Sony ICF2002 and later radios.

A few small warts notwithstanding it's really an amazing little radio.
I've listened to hams from 160 on up with no problem. Also caught some
maritime traffic, a few airliners, etc.

My Degen 1103 is stable and sounds great on SSB. The little BFO thumbwheel
takes the BFO plus/minus about 3.0 KC.....more than is needed to bring in
SSB voice to sound natural. The radio has a wide/narrow selectable filter
switch. I usually use the Wide filter, even on SSB.

It is a fantastic radio for the money.

Buy one, you won't give this one to a niece! You'll keep this one.

BFO. I can hear both SSB voice and CW transmissions very well.

SSB on my Degen 1103 was crap compared to my 7600GR.

The double price for the Kaito version available through stateside dealers
is for the warranty - you will need it!
Purchasing a Degen from China for half the price of a Kaito, for all
practical purposes, makes Degen's warranty worthless.

You better act soon. Factory new Sonys are becoming difficult to find.

Hi Dewayne,

What type of antenna are you using for your 7600GR?

Thanks
Lucky

I Emailed Kaito today and told them they were too high priced. for
KA1103. I told them they had to at least ship for free or throw in the
KA-31 loop or I would just buy off of Ebay from Lypin. They decided to
throw in the loop. I might still buy off of Ebay.
