And then they compress the hell out of it, and for AM overmodulate the
peaks for CB-style range enhancement.

There's an NRSC ''Mask'' which is used to keep the sidebands within
limits but no requirement to use any preemphasis, unlike the FM
standards.


TV standards also require preemphasis IIRC. But you're right about AM.
