Howdy,
My question is for all you military radio buffs. I'm going to restore an Ex USMC Humvee and I need to know something about the radios that are used currently. At this point I know nothing about them. Since I'm also a Ham I'd like any radio I put in to work on the Ham bands and not just look cool, although cool is important too. :') Thanks for the pointers folks, Matthew D. |

Depends on wether you want a "command vehicle" or "close-air-support" or ??? I
would find a picture of one in the news or from a military site and go from there. Besides, then you will need the appropiate mike, speaker, power supply, tuner and finally antenna. And then you will need three of everything cause they are allways failing. Now that I think of it you probably cannot buy a SINGARS radio either. I spent a few years in the Army. But the last thing I would want in my vehicle is one of those worthless RT-524 VHF radios. Too heavy to just haul around cause it looks good! Thanks for the reply Mike. I had a low band rig in mind. You say they're
unreliable? I thought being a military radio they'd be, forgive the pun, bulletproof. Otherwise I'd just go get an 706MII and a remote head kit. If I read you right these radios come as separate Rx and Tx units? There goes the budget! I saw an as-new SINCGARS radio on ebay last month. Went for over $1500 without the "boards" needed to work. Looked very cool. Thanks again for the advice, Matthew "Mike" wrote in message ... Depends on wether you want a "command vehicle" or "close-air-support" or ??? Matthew:
There is no "humvee radio" as such. The radios installed in any military vehicle depend on the radios used by the unit. Whatever radios are in the unit's inventory are mounted in the humvee, duece, 5 ton, etc. Most units don't have HF capability ( I used to be in a reserve unit that tried to demonstrate the advantages of HF) so you mostly find VHF-FM radios of all types and vintages from PRC-77& RT-524 to SINCGARS. Units install what they have. On the "worthless" RT-524...I once visited a 'retrans' site ( "retransmit"...Army equivalent to a repeater site) that was based on two RT-524's, connected with a retrans cable, and two separate antennas about 50 feet apart. They had six RT-524's on site, to improve the odds of having two that worked. The ones that were in service were shaded with tarps to keep the sun off them and covered with wet towels to keep them cool. Roger K6XQ |

I had a Humvee.. Here is the problem with any other type of radio or any
other electronics is... 1. MOISTURE!! You can not completely keep moisture out of the cab.. 2. 24 volt system.. ACTUALLY mine ran at about 27v - 28 v This plays hell with a 24v - 12v converter.. 3. ROUGH RIDING TRUCK.. Most radios and electronics will NOT hold up.. I sold mine.. It was a GREAT BIG TOY.. and bought a regulay Hummer... Good luck Steve "Matthew D." wrote in message t...
